Jørgen Strand Larsen thought he had scored a goal around the 15-minute mark, but his celebration was short-lived as he was flagged offside. The reason for the offside call was Jhon Arias interfering with Emiliano Martínez.
Villa's goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, was the reason for the score remaining level at halftime. In the first minute of stoppage time, he made a save from Strand Larsen, and then made an incredible stop from the subsequent corner by tipping Yerson Mosquera's powerful header against the bar.
The subdued atmosphere at Villa Park reflected the home team's lackluster performance. Things could have been even worse just after the restart if not for Pau Torres' perfectly timed sliding tackle to deny Strand Larsen a simple goal.
It seemed as though it would take something special for Villa to find a breakthrough, and that's exactly what happened. Boubacar Kamara scored a goal from the edge of the area, hitting the top corner.
