Mbappe joined Los Blancos last summer and has made 49 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 4 assists. He's currently Real's top scorer and has a shot at winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
But Rothen, speaking on RMC Radio, believes Mbappe should have stayed in the Ligue 1. 'He arrived at his dream club with the ambition of winning every trophy, including the Champions League, and also of being among the best players in the world and winning the Ballon d'Or,' he said.
'Collectively and individually, he is a failure. He will not win the Ballon d'Or this year. He is a resounding failure.'
Rothen added that while Mbappe has scored goals, he's 'catastrophic' in the games. 'At the start of the season, mitigating factors were found. He could have had time to adapt, but when you're Mbappe, the adaptation time is shorter,' he explained.
Real Madrid's Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal this week hasn't helped Mbappe's case. The French side have already won Ligue 1, while Mbappe's chances of winning La Liga are slim due to Barcelona's dominance. Rothen's words hint that the grass isn't always greener in football, even when moving to Madrid.
