Leeds United had an impressive start to the season, having scored four goals in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League games, the most of any team this season.
Leeds took the lead early in the match when a half-cleared free-kick was kept alive by Anton Stach, and Ezri Konsa's attempted clearance hit Lukas Nmecha, allowing the ball to trickle over the line.
Aston Villa responded with a free-kick from Emiliano Buendía, but it sailed high over the bar, failing to find the back of the net. The first half was marked by stop-start play and challenging conditions, which did not contribute to a visually appealing game.
Despite struggling to create scoring opportunities, Leeds looked more likely to score the game's second goal. However, they were unable to convert their chances, with Brenden Aaronson's volley from the edge of the area being repelled by Emiliano Martínez.
Aston Villa finally managed a meaningful effort on goal in the first half, with Ollie Watkins bending an effort inches wide of the target. This served as a warning to Leeds that the game was far from over.
With the score tied at halftime, Aston Villa stormed back in the second half, securing a 2-1 victory and extending their unbeaten head-to-head record against Leeds to six matches.
